VOLUNTEER CLEARANCE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. I would like to volunteer in the classroom only and do not plan on driving on field trips.  Am I required to get Live Scan fingerprinting done?

No, as long as you are being supervised by an OUSD employee while volunteering in the classroom or at school.

2. I’ve been fingerprinted for something else.  May I use old prints to volunteer?

No.  Each organization that works with students is responsible for maintaining their own clearance records and is legally required to keep them secure.

3. I am a current OUSD teacher and I have a child who is a student at Crocker.  Do I need to be fingerprinted?

Yes, for the same reasons stated above. The Oakland Education Fund (OEF) and OUSD are separate organizations.

4. Will my fingerprinting results expire?

No.  Your fingerprinting results will not expire to volunteer in Oakland public schools so long as they were completed with OEF after August 2016.

5. I have a child at another Oakland public school.  Do I need to go through this process again to receive clearance there as an unsupervised volunteer?

No.  Also, if your child will be moving on and attending an OUSD middle school, please contact OEF to update the system with your child’s new school.

6. Do I need to go see a doctor to get TB clearance?

If you are considered low-risk, you may complete the TB risk assessment form and drop it off at the main office.  We will have a nurse sign it for you and contact you when it is ready. If you are not considered low-risk, you may be asked to provide further documentation from your physician.

7. Where can I get fingerprinted?

There are usually two fingerprinting events scheduled at Crocker at the beginning of the school year.  If you are unable to attend these events, OEF recommends the following vendors. Please make sure you have the correct Live Scan form with you.

  • Loss Prevention Group – (510) 836-6011
  • Redtomatoes Mobile Notary – (510) 847-4828

8. Does my volunteer badge expire?

Yes.  It is good for 4 years from the date of your last TB clearance.  You will find the expiration date on the lower corner of your badge.  To renew your badge, please send OEF a copy of your new TB clearance or risk assessment form.  You do not need to be fingerprinted again.

9. How can I contact the Oakland Education Fund?

The phone number is (510) 221-6968 ext. 709.  The email address is: osv@oaklandedfund.org
