How does the committee define equity?

Equity is defined as “the state, quality or ideal of being just, impartial and fair.” The concept of equity is synonymous with fairness and justice. It is helpful to think of equity as not simply a desired state of affairs or a lofty value. To achieve and sustain equity, it needs to be thought of as a structural and systemic concept.

Everyone benefits from a more just, equitable system.

We define racial equity as both an outcome and a process. As an outcome, we achieve racial equity when race no longer determines one’s socioeconomic outcomes; when everyone has what they need to thrive, no matter where they live. As a process, we apply racial equity when those most impacted by structural racial inequity are meaningfully involved in the creation and implementation of the institutional policies and practices that impact their lives.

In this work, we also include families and students with physical disabilities, those who are neurodiverse, and welcome LGBTQIA+ families and students.

Vision

On our journey to dismantle systemic racism and strive for racial justice, we aspire to become a community that honors all individuals, their inherent dignity and supports all children and families to reach their full potential while honoring their unique backgrounds, interests and identities.

Mission

The equity committee is a group of diverse parents and teachers committed to equity, inclusion, dismantling systemic racism and supporting families and students at Crocker and in OUSD. We are committed to modeling diversity and inclusion for our students, families and communities, maintaining an inclusive environment with equitable treatment and compassion, and actively creating meaningful change.

We strive to:

  • Maintain a school culture that celebrates and values diversity
  • Identify and understand the systemic barriers faced by students both within and outside of Crocker, and work collaboratively with students, families and district partners to overcome them
  • Engage in community action that reinforces and strengthens our school’s connection to the broader Oakland community
