Equity Committee

What is the Equity Committee?

The equity committee is composed of parent volunteers committed to promoting a fair and just educational experience for all Crocker students and OUSD more broadly.  Our work falls into three key areas:

 Upcoming equity committee activities:

EXCITING “CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE” VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT OAKLAND HIGH SCHOOL

We are looking for volunteers that can help Oakland High seniors prepare and apply for college (applications due November 30) and write a capstone research paper (deadline for the Introduction section is December 7 and Results is February 1).

The goal of the senior capstone paper is for students to hone their skills at independent research, academic writing, and engaging adult “experts” who can guide their work.  Engaging an adult “expert” outside of Oakland High is a critical component of the projects, and what community has a better network of experts than Crocker?

All commitment levels are welcome, from liaising as/with an expert to critiquing students’ writing and references.  Students have chosen their research topics in the following social justice areas: foster care, education, immigration, poverty and homeless, medicine, and conservation.  At the editable Google document, you will find (1) a list of un-edited research topics chosen by the students and (2) one fictional question and fictional volunteers to provide an example of the information we would like our volunteers to provide.

Please sign up by November 1 so that we can help students reach their college application and capstone deadlines.

Supplemental, out-of-classroom academic support is a critical component of high retention and graduation of under-served populations (link). Because we are working with Oakland High students that are first in their families to go to college, we hope to widen the number of adults that can help students navigate future academic life.

Spread the word!  If you have a colleague or alumni network that you think could be a resource to students, feel free to pass along this opportunity.  While volunteers do not require the typical OUSD screening, volunteers should expect to meet with a student and another Oakland High student “buddy” in a public space.

Please contact me for more information (erin.conlisk@gmail.com858-776-2939).  I am available to chat by phone and/or provide a more detailed document describing this opportunity.
