A Letter from the Principal

August 31, 2009

Dear Crocker Highlands’ Families,

Welcome to the opening of what promises to be a wonderful school year!  At this time of the year, there is great anticipation of what is to come, and I am as excited as the Crocker Highlands’ teachers, children, and parents.  Why? I am excited because I get to return to Crocker in this new position as principal.  I was a teacher in the Oakland Public Schools for 16 years, and as many of you know, I was a teacher here at Crocker Highlands for 10 of those years.  Last year I enrolled in the New Leaders for New Schools program to earn my administrative credential and was a resident principal at EnCompass Academy in Oakland.  I am honored to have the opportunity to return to Crocker and to be part of this wonderful community.

Together, teachers, students, and parents/guardians make a strong Crocker family.  We appreciate your support as your child enters the classroom, learns, and grows through the year.  Let’s all commit to have a good school year, setting everyone, students, as well as teachers, up for success.

Throughout the year I look forward to meeting the new members of our community and connecting with returning community members. I encourage families to get to know each other so that we can build new friendships and support each other as the need arises.  You will have a great opportunity to meet new people and see old friends at the Annual Dads’ Club Spaghetti Feed at 5:30 on September 8th.  It’s a wonderful time to have a delicious dinner and visit with the Crocker community.  Another upcoming school event is Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 16 (time to be announced).  This is the time when parents/guardians will meet in the classrooms with teachers and learn about grade level curriculum, projects, and expectations.  And don’t forget to join the PTA; the first meeting is Thursday, September 10th.

A few things to make our year go more smoothly – first, please help us to be good neighbors.  The traffic flow around the school is clockwise; the passenger door always opens to the curb for safety reasons.  Make sure to park legally; be aware of blocking driveways.  And, as tempting as it might be to bring your dog up to school, pets are to remain off campus.  If you must bring your dog up to campus for some reason, please keep him/her on a leash across the street.  Be considerate of children and adults who might be allergic and/or who might be uncomfortable around animals.  Another way to help our year go smoothly is to check out the new Crocker Highlands’ website.  It’s been updated and has information you need to keep on top of what’s happening at school.  Check it out!  And finally, school begins at 8:40 a.m.  You set your child up for success by getting him/her to school on time, ready to learn.

We are ready to begin the 2009-2010 school year. The teachers have put a lot of time and energy getting ready for the year.  Having spent a lot of time up here this summer, I was impressed to see the dedication of our staff, preparing all summer for the school year.  At Crocker Highlands, the staff, faculty, and administration are honored that you entrust us with your precious ones. The hours that your children are with us each day are so important.  Here’s to a great school year!

Sincerely,

Beth Rhine – Principal Crocker Elementary School
